Statement of intent
Theme: series
My chosen theme for my GCSE Photography coursework is : ‘Series’, I have chosen to study this theme as I believe it allows me enormous scope to explore and specialise the skills that I have learnt throughout the photography course. My aim is to produce a website page of work demonstrating my ideas and creative work on a theme that I'm given or chose. By the end I will hopefully will display 10 image galleries, each of which are a different theme that I am happy with.
Initial research:
For my initial research I will create a Coggle mind map to map pit my first ideas. It will help me research photography in different themes to see what I could do when I do that theme. In order to produce a successful, creative and unique final gallery I intend to carry out a variety of research on my chosen theme of ‘Series’. I will research and interpret a variety of artists and photographs, this will allow me to to successfully project my influences and ideas into my work. I hope to explore all options in terms of media and visual exhibitions to build up an intricate understanding of my chosen thee of 'series'. The photographer I am going to research in is Liu Zheng as she does some work in series and i will continue to google images in series
Time line:
I have 2-3 months to produce my page of work towards the production of my final page. I aim to complete all the themes on the Coggle mind map within the first week and then I will do my photography research to help inspire my photo shoots. I then aim to do one shoot a week or two to build up my portfolio of images. I will edit and upload the photos from the shoot into their appropriate 10 image galleries.
Photoshoots:
I intend to capture a variety of photo shoots to explore my chosen theme of ‘Series’. I will involve myself in a number of photo shoots, both inside and outside of the school environment to progress my ideas, capturing specific photo shoots influenced by certain artists but also take broader photo shoots to indulge in creativity. I hope to include a variety of photographic genres into my work like all the ones on the coggle mind map. I am going to use my own phone camera at first as this will allow me to explore a different approach to taking images and will also allow me to capture images from a broader range of resources. I am going to research different apps that I can use to refine my images.
Techniques:
Throughout this project, I will use a variety of techniques with the camera. I will explore both manual and automatic techniques on the camera - helping me to portray the themes of Series through focused and blurred work. I will also use a variety of ISO, apertures and shutter speeds to emphasise certain features within the photographs. I may also experiment with mobile photography in order to manually manipulate the photographs to comply with each theme. I will also use digital techniques, such as on Photoshop to edit photographs I have taken.
What I hope to learn:
In doing this project, I hope to learn more about the theme of ‘series’ and carry out an extensive research on a variety of particular artists and photographers and themes. I also hope to specialise and finalise the skills I have learnt throughout the GCSE photograph course and successfully implement them into my final piece.
Final format:
I see my final format a gallery of my best images with all different themes showing a range of skills and inspiration.

Context:
Zakie Mashiah is an amateur photographer who displays a lot of his work on Social media. Although I am unable to find much information about this photographer, I really like his work and think that I can use it to inspire my own outcomes because his photos are very unique and his images of landscapes are very pleasing to view.
Content:
In this image I can see a row of hats and overcoats that belong to the Jewish faith, they are all black and quite severe and look like they are part of their religious garments. It looks like the image has been taken in a cloakroom or waiting room because I can see that the hats are on hooks. I think the room looks quite plain and simple so not in someones home, but a formal place. (possible a place of worship)
Composition:
The photographer has used the rule of thirds, with the top third as the room and two thirds the coats and hats. Because he has used this technique the image composition is very strong and makes us drawn to the hats.
The photographer has either used a shallow depth of field, such as F8 or has manipulated the background in photo shop, as it is blurred out. By doing this he has made the coats and hats stand out.
The lighting in my opinion, is quite harsh in the foreground, with bright highlights on that hats, This makes the image sharper in the font but softer in the back. The image is very monochrome, nearly all black and white but there is a hint of purple in the foreground which makes it more interesting.
The image has strong leading lines of the coat rack to impact and enhance the rule of thirds line. It is clear that the coats are very close to the front of the image frame. I predict the photographer used a tripod because the image is very straight. The corner of the room is in the first third of the image this creates a dark shadow clearly showing use the corner of the room.
Comment:
I like this image because its very bold and powerful as its mostly monochrome. I think this image can relate to my work as it portrays left garments of clothing which is something that I could take images of.

The series of still life photos above is taken by Simone White. Her photos are all shot with natural light on a tiny shelf in her house using flowers and plants found on her walks around the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. The colour and light changes with the time of day and year. Simone White's still life photographs are seen on her instagram feed @simonewhitemusic her main job is a musician photography is her hobby.
Content:
In this image sequence I can see a lot of flowers and decorative objects on a shelf with natural lighting. I can definitely see the photos have been taken in the day time due to the natural lighting . The background of the images is dark brown and wooden this makes the objects that are more vibrant stand out and make us drawn to them.
Composition:
The photographer has used the rule of thirds, with the top third the plain wooden shelf and the other two thirds with the decorative items. Because he has used this technique the image composition is very strong and makes us drawn to the decorative items that are on the shelf.
The photographer has either used a shallow depth of field, such as F8 as it is very softly blurred out. By doing this she has made the decorative items on the self became the main attraction in the image.
The lighting in my opinion, is very dark in the background, This makes the image pop and become sharper in the font but softer in the back.
I predict the photographer used a tripod because the image is very straight. The corner of the shelf is in the last third of some of the images this creates a dark shadow clearly showing use the corner of the shelf.
Comment:
I like this image sequence because its very bold and powerful but also very simple and minimalistic . I think this image can relate to my work as it portrays series and I can use the same background/shelf and just move or change the objects to make a interesting, pleasant series of images.
